RECRUITING FOR ATHLETES

Q- Should athletes use Recruiting Services?

A- Those that go to parents and say for $150, we’ll promote your kid are big rip offs. Don’t pay in hopes of turning that into a scholarship. We send extensive questionnaires to high schools. It is an advantage to go to football camps to sell yourself in person though. We spend days looking for a young man’s human qualities; they become more than a number on a tape. You get to sit and talk face to face with coaches. They get to know you and you them.

Q- Can or should athletes promote themselves?

A- Absolutely consider initiating a relationship with a coach or school. Sometimes, even with recruiting service listings and all the media a coach wouldn’t know about kids in another part of the country. I have a recurring fear that there’s a great kid out there who I don’t know anything about and could have a real interest in our program.
